What is a vCIO, and Does Your Company Need One?

October 10, 2018

Today’s cybersecurity landscape is forcing companies, especially small to midsize businesses (SBMs), to evaluate their IT needs.  Many business executives are beginning to grasp the seriousness of a cyberattack and understand the need to secure their networks. However, it can be daunting to think about hiring a dedicated IT staff member. What position do you hire first  – a Security Analyst? Virus Technician? Cryptographer? For an SMB, a great place to start is to hire a managed service provider (MSP) who can offer proactive managed IT services. An MSP can provide clients with multiple levels of support, including a dedicated account team made up of a vCIO, Field Network Engineers (FNEs), help desk staff and more.  Of all of these positions, the vCIO is one of the most unique and valuable additions .

What is a vCIO?

A vCIO is a Virtual Chief Information Officer who acts as the CIO for a client. This position was designed specifically for who are SMBs looking to grow, but do not have the budget to hire an on-staff CIO. A vCIO oversees a client’s full IT infrastructure, ensuring the network evolves as the business grows. The role of a vCIO also includes onboarding the client’s end-users and staff members, overseeing the FNEs who maintain a company’s network, developing client policies and procedures, training clients and reviewing technology and software opportunities to accomplish business goals.

Key Functions and Benefits of a vCIO

Although virtual, a vCIO is a real person and a valuable member of the team that helps manage a company’s IT infrastructure today and plan for future success. Below are key functions and benefits of a vCIO:

  • Serves as a dedicated executive technology liaison
  • Provides guidance as an expert partner
  • Works to define IT objectives and plan technology roadmaps
  • Plans and proposes additional on-site projects for improvement
  • Lowers overhead costs on salaries
  • Assists with the procurement of hardware and software
  • Proactively pulls technical reporting
  • Actively works as the CIO for the client

For SMBs, working with an MSP for managed IT services is an efficient and cost-effective way to hire an IT team. For companies that may not have the funds to hire a CIO, partnering with an MSP, who provides vCIO services along with a full team of onsite and help desk support, is a vCIO is the perfect solution.
